PCP Behavioral Health Toolkit
Project Background: Many people go to their primary care physician for behavioral health issues, such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, etc. Sometimes this works well, but sometimes it doesn't. Often medications prescribed for depression or anxiety have side effects, such as issues with weight gain/loss or diabetes, or they conflict with existing medications. There also may be undiagnosed underlying conditions that interfere with patients' care.
Problem: How can we help primary care physicians provide better care for their patients' mental health needs?
Process: Extensive ethnographic research--compiled from focus groups, surveys, and secondary research--showed that PCPs handle a sizable number of behavioral health cases, and that, due to insufficient resources, a majority of those cases are misdiagnosed. This research was conveyed to the customer via personas, journey maps, site maps, wireframes, and storyboards, and designs were created illustrating how we can use the website to help alleviate this problem.
Design Solution: Designed a customizable, web-based toolkit for medical providers. Providers can access condition-specific materials and a training library on a variety of subjects, such as best practices, depression, ADHD, anxiety, domestic violence, grief and loss, suicide prevention, and teenagers and substance abuse. They can also make referrals to a behavioral health provider, contact a special liaison with questions or schedule a consultation with a Magellan specialist.
